Safer School Zone Pilot Project
Hope for victims of Traffic Accidents (HOVITA) with support from Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) will be implementing an 18 months’ road safety project aimed at reducing the road crashes and injuries among school going children in Gulu city as pilot thereafter to be rolled out to other cities and districts in Uganda with focus on speed management. The two schools selected from Gulu city are Gulu Primary School and Mother Angelliota Primary School to act as pilot schools in Uganda
The project is aligned with the Third National Development Plan (NDP III), specifically intervention 5, “Increase urban resilience by militating against accidents and flood” of Objective 3 in the Sustainable Urbanization and Housing section. Furthermore, the project supports the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially SDG 3, target 3.6 which states that, “By 2030, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from traffic accidents”, and SDG 11, target 11.2 which states that, “by 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations like women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons.” The project will also contribute to addressing the 4th pillar Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety on Safer road users
Road Safety Awareness
Throughout 2017, HOVITA carried out road safety sensitization along the Kevina-Makindye road, a road that was under construction by Abu baker Construction Company. We carried out road safety awareness in schools and communities along the roads, installed speed calming measures and sensitized the community about gender and crosscutting issues.
Road Survivors Livelihood Skills
HOVITA empowerment started in April 2018. This was a fund development project aiming at empowering road accident victims in Kampala and surrounding areas such as Wakiso, Mukono, and Entebbe. HOVITA empowerment projects empowered all willing individuals that were affected by road incidents with skills that help them earn extra income and improve their livelihoods. This project is still ongoing in Makindye division with four groups of 25 members who have been trained to make liquid soap, books, beaded bags and basic financial management skills.
Motor Third Party Insurance Compensation
The project implementation commenced in July 2019 and is still ongoing. This is an insurance pilot supported project being implemented by HOVITA in partnership with Ministry of Health, Uganda police and insurance Regulatory Authority. The project is being implemented in seven selected Hospitals that admit number of road crash victims. The hospitals include, Mulago, Kiruddu, Nzi hospital along Kampala-Masaka Highway, Kawolo hospital along Kampala- Jinja Highway, Nsambya Hospital, Kawempe Hospital and Naguru hospital.
Global Fleet Champions Campaign /Awards
The project commenced implementation in June 2019 and the Award Dinner was held on the 31st January 2020. The project is implemented by HOVITA in Uganda supported by Brake the Road safety Charity UK. Global Fleet Champions is a not-for-profit global campaign to whose aim is to prevent road crashes and reduce pollution caused by vehicles used for work purposes.
Global Fleet Champions Awards celebrate the best safety and sustainability standards of fleets anywhere in the world, including in low- and middle-income nations. As a result of this campaign, we awarded the best fleet operator MARKH INVESTMENTS whose priority was safety. The company had moved 7 million kilometers for 3 years without fatal Accidents..
Skills Development Training for Traffic Police Officers in Accident Investigation
The project was implemented to strengthen the skills of Traffic police investigators capacity in enforcement of Traffic laws, in Particular to eliminate fraudulent insurance claims that have of late increased. This project has so far trained 51 selected Traffic police officers from Kampala Metropolitan supported by Uganda Insurers Association (UIA).
UN Global Road Safety Week {UNGRSW} in Uganda 2021
Hope for Victims of Traffic Accidents (HOVITA), Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO) and Consult Afrika Usalama under the Incubator project joined the rest of the world in marking the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety on the 19th May 2021 at St Peter’s Primary school Nsambya under the theme: “Streets for Life # Love 30”. The objective of the week was to garner policy commitments at the national and local levels to deliver 30km/hr. speed limits around school zones, generate local support for such low-speed measures and build momentum towards the launch of Global plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 in late 2021 and the High-Level meeting of the UN General Assembly in 2022. The event was officiated by the commissioner of transport, Regulation and Safety, Mr. Wiston Katushabe. And other key stakeholders including a representative from World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Kasule, a representative from KCCA, Uganda Police Force, and Civil Society Organizations.
